1. Why do we add hydrolised chicken protein to dry food and what is it?
The hydrolised chicken protein is only present in small amounts sprayed at the surface of the product to improve palatability. As these proteins are completely hydrolised (which means that they are cut in very small parts by an enzymatic reaction), they lose their properties as allergen (which means that the body immune system cannot longer recognize these proteins as chicken proteins so that even dogs allergic to chicken will not have allergic reactions to this proteins. Because of this we can add hydrolised chicken protein also to food like Lamm&Ris and Lax&Ris- that are suitable for allergic dogs.
2. Why do we add fish meal to our products (even to the one indicated for allergic dogs, like for example Lamm&Ris)?
Adding fish meal provides a high quality source of omega 3 fatty acids: these essential fatty acids are indicated in the case of allergies because of their anti-inflammatory properties. Of course, fish meal is not a protein of land animals so there is no conflict with the nutrition school manual (Nutrition part 1 and 2).
3. Do we add something to cat food to prevent bad smell of stool?
To cat food we add yucca extract (this is natural extract, has no negative effects. It does the following: Yucca saponins have ammonia-binding activity. When added to the diet, yucca saponins pass through the digestive tract unabsorbed and are excreted in the feces. In the excreta, the yucca components bind to ammonia and certain other odiferous compounds and prevent them from being released into the air. Cats have their cat litter box indoor and thus smell of stool is an item. Two solutions: yucca in the food prevents smell and Husse cat litter will do the rest.
4. Do we add something to dog food to prevent bad smell of stool?
In dog food the eventual smell of stool is not an item. Dogs go outside. An eventual problem in dogs could be flatulence. The dog's feeding habits may effectively cause flatulence. For example, this may occur when the animal wolfs down its food, getting too much air in the process or when the chunks are insufficiently masticated, thereby ending up in the stomach unreduced. Preventive steps include: serving larger-sized chunks forcing the dog to chew its food to better effect; offering several meals a day to counteract scoffing and to put less of a strain on the stomach; making sure the dog is able to eat its food peacefully, i.e. avoid having other dogs or cats around to rule out the element of competition; allowing the dog to rest after the meal as stress and agitation only serve to slow down the emptying of the stomach; serving super premium food as this allows your dog to eat less of rations which are more digestible. In addition, fresh meat and inferior quality meat are also often at the root of flatulence which, at worst, may even prompt diarrhea. If none of the above advice is able to redress your dog's flatulence problem, we would suggest you go and see your vet to have your animal examined for any intestinal disorders.
5. What kind of fat do we use in our dry food?
We use lard as fat source in our dog food. Animal fats are a good energy source and increase the palatability of the product. The kind of fat (lard or tallow) is not so important: more important is the quality of the fat: fresh fat, not rancid and efficiently protected against oxidation with antioxidants. Important is also that some fat sources are added which contain omega-3 fatty acids: for this purpose, we add salmon oil to some of the Husse products (super premium range).
6. Why does husse dry food contain salt?
Salt is needed as source of sodium and chloride, two essential nutrients necessary for the water househouding in the body. These electrolytes regulate if the osmolarity in the body tissues. Dogs can receive too much salt, but this is very unlikely with industrial petfood. Also the combination of meat and dry food does not cause problems concerning salt. The Husse products contain optimum salt concentrations that insure sufficient intake of sodium and chloride, and also give optimal taste and water intake: salt does indeed influence taste of the food as well as water intake. The used dosages in husse dry food are safe and far below the salt levels which could interfere with optimal health.
7. Is there a product that helps adjust the level of potassium in the older cat?
Especially cats receiving an acidifying diet (in case of urolithiasis = feline urologic syndrome) lose more potassium via the urine. Therefore, the potassium content of the food should compensate the losses. Best way to adjust potassium level is via the diet by using a quality cat food (like for example husse cat food) with an appropriate potassium level in function of its acidifying effect.
8. To what size do the kibbles (husse dry food) expand to when soaked in water?
There is no simple answer to this question: the expansion during soaking depends on a lot of factors: - soaking time and soaking temperature will influence expansion - size of the kibble influences the expansion: smaller kibbles have a relatively larger contact surface with the water and will have more expansion - the composition of the kibble: more starch = more expansion - a fat coating on the contrary will reduce expansion as this reduces the contact with the water - the cooking degree also effects expansion: the higher the starch gelatinization, the more expansion. On average, a kibble will +/- double in size during soaking, but as you see, a lot of factors influence expansion during soaking
9. Are husse dry food products suitable for dogs and cats with kidney stones?
To choose an appropriate diet to eliminate kidney stones, first thing to do is to analyze the crystals in the urine to know the type of kidney stone: each type of urinary stone needs a specific treatment: In case of struviet stones, acidifiers need to be supplemented to the diet to acidify the urine. Other stones need on the contrary less acid urine. In the case of oxalate stones, a diet low in oxalates is indicated. In the case of urate stones, allopurinol is given as medication to avoid the formation of urates. Conclusion: each type of stone needs a specific treatment. Most often, special diets are required. Husse cat food have an acidity appropriate to prevent the formation of struviet stones (most common urinary stones in cat). For the treatment of stones however, specific veterinary prescription diets are needed.
10. What product would you advise for a dog that suffers from hepatic problems?
Concerning diets for liver disease, there are no Husse products which are really suited for real liver disease. For these patients, special prescription veterinary diets are indicated. For moderate hepatic failure, you could eventually advocate the superpremium products as they have the highest vitamin contents and the highest digestibility: the main aim of diets for hepatic disease is giving liver protecting vitamins (fi choline) and very easy digestible food. Veterinary check and advice is mandatory!
11. What is fiber and how much fiber should dry food contain?
Fiber reduces digestibility of the nutrients. Therefore, high fiber levels are not wanted in dog food for working dogs or competition dogs. Fiber reduces the energy density of the food. For active dogs, a high energy content and high digestibility of the food is required. This means that dietary fiber needs to be limited. The analysis of fiber is very complex as "fiber" is a group of very different analytical substances: lignin, cellulose, hemicellulose, pectins, gums. With the classic analysis following the weende procedure, only a part of the food fiber is analysed as "crude fiber". Although it is "the crude fiber" content that needs to be mentioned on the packaging, researchers don't use this analysis a lot as it underestimates the total dietary fiber content. Expressed as crude fiber, it is indeed a good idea to limit the crude fiber to 3%. As researchers don't use this crude fiber as parameter since it only partially measures the dietary fiber, you will not find recent scientific sources on that: nowadays, scientists prefer to define the fiber requirements expressed as total dietary fiber, insoluble fiber and soluble fiber. Please notice also that fiber also has beneficial effects and that a minimum of fiber is needed for optimal intestinal health and faeces consistency. The ratio soluble/unsoluble fiber is very important. Beet fiber has an optimal ratio soluble fiber/unsoluble fiber and therefore is a good fiber source in dogs.
12. Has vitamin A function in protein assimilation?
Vitamin A has no function in protein assimilation. According to the most recent literature, vitamin A has 5 key functions in dogs: vision, growth, cellular differentiation and immune function. Adequate intake is defined in NRC (National Research Council) as 1212 IU/kg DM (1212 IU/kg DM means 1212 international units vitamin A per kg dry matter : this is the food without water).The hydrolised chicken protein is only present in small amounts and is sprayed on the surface of the product to improve palatability. 13. What is the best food for hard working dogs? Our competitor sells food that has 42% of protein, why is this good/ bad?
Concerning best energy sources in dog food, fat is the most concentrated energy source: contains twice as much energy as protein or carbohydrates. This is why working dogs are best fed with a high fat diet.
In the Husse product range, Optimal Energy has the highest fat content (22% fat) and the lowest carbohydrate content (30% carbohydrates). Dogs with standing ears (fi malinois and german shephards) often have difficulties to digest starch due to a less active pancreas (= organ which produces digestive enzymes). The higher fat and lower carbohydrate content in Optimal Energy explain why the Optimal Energy is better than the Valp for working dogs. Another possibility is to advice the Lax and Rice or Lamb and rice products as the starch from rice is better digestible than the starch from other cereals. It is not a good idea to chose high protein diets as these diets are not good for the kidneys: the degradation metabolites of the proteins (urea) need to be eliminated by the kidneys.

14. Can minerals in cat food cause kidney stones?
Concerning the influence of minerals on FUS (Feline Urologic Syndrome = mineral precipitation in the urinary tract of cats): Not all minerals contribute to the formation of stones: only Phosphor and Magnesium are a part of the struvite stones and should be limited. Increasing sodium content reduces the risk of bladder stones as this stimulates the water intake and dilutes the concentration of the precipitating minerals. Potassium (= Kalium) has a protective effect on the kidneys: recent studies demonstrated that potassium should be increased in acidifying diets. The most important factor in the prevention of FUS: the acidity of the urine. Petfood producers should formulate the diets so that they cause a slightly acid pH. (in nature, animal proteins cause a acid urine, cheap catfood with vegetable proteins causes an alcalic urine which causes precipitation of the minerals. The Husse catfood contain high amounts of animal proteins and sulfur containing amino acids which cause an optimal pH (acidity) of the urine: this prevents the precipitation of minerals. In our Pet Research Centre, we regularly controll the pH of the urine.
15. Does dry food products contain starch?
Starch itself is not an ingredient but as all cereals contain +/- 60% of starch, all the super premium products contain an amount of starch.In dog food the eventual smell of stool is not an item. Dogs go outside. An eventual problem in dogs could be flatulence. The dog's feeding habits may effectively cause flatulence. No, we do not use this kind of products.
17. Does husse food contain Choline chloride? If yes is it organic?
cholin chlorid = choline = an essential B-vitamin:
* should always be present in dog food
* is a EC authorised additif used in all our dog and cat food
* is always organic (inorganic means mineral origin, which is not relevant for vitamins)
* cholin chloride is a synthetic additive just like most other vitamins
18. How long should the giant breed puppies be fed with (Valp Maxi)? At which month should they switch to Optimal Giant?
As the "Valp Maxi" is a food for growing dogs of giant breeds, while the "Optimal Giant" is a maintenance food for giant dogs, I would advice to give the Valp Maxi till the end of the growth period. Dogs of giant breeds grow till +/- 18 months. This is the moment to switch to Optimal Giant
19. Is Senior suitable for dogs of all sizes?
The Husse Senior is indeed suitable for all dog sizes. In fact, during aging, the nutritional requirements change in the same way for all breeds:
* Older dogs often have reduced renal function: this is why the protein content is kept low.
* As the activity of older dogs is lower, also the energy and fat content of the food is reduced.
* The senior also contains chondroitin and glucosamin as older dogs often have joint disease.
20. What is PH value of Exclusive Outdoor, Exclusive Light and Kattunge? Do we acetify pet food for cats by any ingredients?
The Husse cat food are developed to produce an urinary pH of about 6.5, which should help prevent urolithiasis in cats. We regularly check the urinary pH of our products in our Pet Research Centre. We have a standard testing protocol in which the urinary pH is controlled 6 hours after the meal (at that moment, the urinary pH obtains the highest values of the day due to the "alcalic tiding" as compensation for the gastric acid production). The optimal urinary pH is obtained by the choice of the ingredients (animal ingredients produce a more acid urine, vegetable ingredients produce a more alcalic urine) and by optimising the "anion-kation" balance (which is dependent of the used minerals and sulfur containing amino-acids as methionin). Some ingredients such as our cat digest produced with fresh chicken livers has a low pH as cats prefer naturaly an acid taste. In our production facilities, we don' t add acids for acidification as we already obtain a sufficient acid urine with the high quality ingredients.
21. Is husse food suitable for dogs with white fur?
Concerning the coloration of white dogs, our experience is that it is most important to feed reduced amounts of beta-carotene.
Lax and Ris contains lower levels of beta-carotene than other products and is for this reason indicated for dogs with a white coat.
22. Why is Light and Light Optimal suitable for dogs with diabetes?
Light and Light Optimal is indeed a food that is indicated for diabetic dogs. Not only because the energy content is moderate due to the relatively low fat content, but also because of the slow release carbohydrates. The crude fiber content mentioned on the packagings only reflects the insoluble, undigestible part of the fiber. The food contains particularly high amounts of special carbohydrates as hemicellulose and pectines, which belong to the soluble fibers and are particularly beneficial for diabetics because they are slowly released from the gut to the blood.
Some advice for feeding diabetic dogs:
feed always the same amounts at the same time of the day
weight reduction significantly reduces insulin requirements and improves condition of the dog
in female dogs, sterilisation reduces insulin requirements and makes it easier to stabilise the dog as the progestagenes released during the sexual cycle have an anti-insulin activity.
23. What is L-carnitine?
The function of carnitine is stimulation of fat burning in the body cells. The burning of fats always results in energy, which can be used for physical activity.
If a lot of fat is present in the food (Optimal Energi), mainly the fats in the food will be burned.
If the amount of fat in the diet is limited (Prima Plus), the body fat reserves will be burned. Also in human nutrition, carnitine has 2 indications: athletes use it in combination with a high fat diet. Obese people use it in combination with a low fat slimming diet.
Conclusion: l-carnitin always stimulates fat burning, which gives energy. Which fats that will be burned is dependent on their availability in the diet. If insufficient fat is available in the diet, body fats are burned.
24. What is the way to hydrolize chicken protein in Husse Petfood? What is the lenght of hydrolized chains of protein?
Hydrolysation of proteins is obtained by adding a kind of enzymes that break down the proteins: these are called proteinases or proteases. For this reaction, temperature and pH of the mixture must be optimal, this is why special reaction tanks are used for this process.
Proteases, also known as proteinases or proteolytic enzymes, are a large group of enzymes.
Proteases belong to the class of enzymes known as hydrolases, which catalyse the reaction of hydrolysis of various bonds with the participation of a water molecule. Proteases are involved in digesting long protein chains into short fragments, splitting the peptide bonds that link amino acid residues. Some of them can detach the terminal amino acids from the protein chain (exopeptidases, such as aminopeptidases, carboxypeptidase A); the others attack internal peptide bonds of a protein (endopeptidases, such as trypsin, chymotrypsin, pepsin, papain, elastase).
Proteases are divided into four major groups according to the character of their catalytic active site and conditions of action: serine proteinases, cysteine (thiol) proteinases, aspartic proteinases, and metalloproteinases. Attachment of a protease to a certain group depends on the structure of catalytic site and the amino acid (as one of the constituents) essential for its activity.
25. Our customer, who is purchasing Kroketter Kyckling or Fisk since 2 months, after blood test his vet suggest to change product with competitive product, because cat’s values are too high for sodium. Is it possible that this situation is depending on our Kroketter?
High sodium levels in cats are rarely caused by an excess of sodium in the diet. Most often, the high sodium levels are caused by dehydration due to insufficient water intake. The sodium levels in Husse Kroketter Cat are safe and do not cause an increase of sodium in cats.
26. Why is Katt Urinary not suitable for kittens or pregnant cats?
Cat urinary is not suitable for pregnant cats and kittens because of the low content of Calcium, Phosphorus and Magnesium.
Ca, P and Mg are important factors for growth of embryos and young animals. Cat urinary will not contain enough of those minerals for youngsters.
Ca, P and Mg have to be as low as possible in cat urinary to help preventing the formation of bladder stones in cats suffering from that kind of problems.
27. Is any of husse dry food for cats suitable for cats with diabetes?
Cats with diabetes should be fed a high fiber diet to decrease digestion and slow down the release of carbohydrates.
Normally, veterinary prescription diets are used. An alternative could be the normal light formulas.
I don’ t see a Husse cat formula with sufficient fiber.
28. Why corn gluten used in our exclusive light dry food for cats. Is it useful somehow? Or it is used just as filling?
Corn gluten is more and more used in cat food because it has some important advantages: this ingredient is low in fat which makes it suitable for a light formula.
Corn gluten is also one of the protein sources with the lowest mineral contents (fi low magnesium level): so also in diets for urinary health, corn gluten is often used to obtain low magnesium and phosphorus levels. The advantages of corn gluten are its high digestibility (similar to chicken meal) and its high biological value. Corn gluten is a high quality vegetable protein which is also very palatable for cats. It is also a quite expensive ingredient and should not be considered as a “filler”.
29. After the cat has started eating Exclusive Outdoor the stool smells strange, why can this happen?
The odour of the faeces is influenced by different factors. Digestive problems caused by bacteria, viruses or simply a sudden food change can cause abnormal fermentation in the gut with a bad odor of the faeces as a consequence. Very important is to explain clients that a food change is made progressively: never change from one food to another without transition period during which new and old food are mixed.

30. Is any dry husse dog food suitable for dogs with weak kidneys?
The main goal of the dietary treatment of kidney failure is reduction of the protein intake as proteins are metabolised to ureum which must be eliminated by the kidneys. The degree of protein reduction in the diet must be in function of the degree of kidney failure. In mild cases of renal failure, the Husse diet with the lowest protein/energy ratio can be choosen: this is the Husse Optimal Light.
In cases of severe kidney failure, special veterinary prescription diets with extremely low protein levels are indicated.
31. Is it true that beet pulp is an ingredient that is not good for cats? It is written like this by many expects on the internet.
Beet pulp is a very good fiber source for dogs and cats. In scientific literature, it has been described as the best fiber source for dogs and cats as it has an optimal ratio between soluble and insoluble fibers. Beet pulp improves gut digestion, improves the condition of the gut villi and optimizes stool consistency. It also has a prebiotic activity (increase of beneficial gut bacteria) and regulates food transit.
The articles on internet were written by people without academic formation who confused some data written about beet pulp in horse feed. In fact, in horses, very high levels of beet pulp could be dangerous in some specific cases. The levels in cats (1.5%-3.5%)are much lower and completely harmless.

32. I have a customer with a 17 year old CAT with a "hyper-active thyroid". What food can I recommend?
Hyperthyroidism is a situation in which the thyroid glands are over active and produce too much thyroid hormone. The treatment for this condition is reducing the effect of this over activity by removing the thyroid glands or by medication that inhibits the activity of the thyroid hormone.
The diet plays no role in the cause or treatment of this disease, so scientifically, it makes no sense to give a feeding advice for these patients.
Most cats lose weight: in the case of weight loss, the cat food with the highest fat level could be given (which is the exclusive outdoor).
33. We have clients who have said that the Husse food is giving their dogs terrible wind. What can we recommend?
Some dogs have a very sensitive digestion and produce winds when some less digestible ingredients are fed. In this case, only the Husse Super Premium products should be advised. In the Husse Super premium range, the Lamm & Ris and Lax & Ris have the highest digestibility as rice is the cereal with the highest digestibility.
For pups producing winds, the Valp could be replaced with the Valp Lamm & Ris.
34. What can prevent the absorption of nutrients, when we switch dog from one pet food to Husse dry food salmon and lamb. Because in our experience dogs lost weight in the first 2 weeks pretty much (for example Shepherd lost up to 5 kg)
Try to mix the foods during a transition period of at least 1 week (see training on line). Especially the salmon (Lax & Riss) has a different flavour: dogs sometimes need some time before they get used to the new taste.We use lard as fat source in our dog food. 35. When we switched the cats from dry feed Royal Canin to Husse outdoor in cats feces appears blood. (we suspect on the pancreas. That pancreas is bad after feeding with Royal Canin) what analyses can identify it?
Blood in faeces is not typical for pancreas problems. This is more a symptom for intestinal disorders. Joined a link to an article on diagnosis of pancreatitis in dogs. Diagnosis requires blood analyses, in which pancreas enzymes are analysed.
However, I’m convinced that the problems are not related to pancreas problems but are related to digestion problems due to lower digestibility or intolerance to some ingredients in the royal canin food.
36. Is Katt Urinary suitable for a overweight, 8 years old cat which has recurring cystitis troubles? Which is the best daily ratio?
The Husse Katt Urinary can be fed to overweight cats.
Some guidelines concerning the amount to feed:
The amount to feed should be based on the optimal body weight: If a cat weighs 5 kg but optimal bodyweight = 3.5kg => look in the table to the quantity for a cat of 3.5 kg
If the cat should still loose weight, then the amount for maintenance should further be reduced with 40% till the optimal body weight is obtained: only 60% of the amount for a cat of 3.5kg should be fed in the example above To avoid that the cat is too hungry, this amount should be divided in 3 to 4 feedings/ day
37. What food can we reccomend for a Belgium Sheppard (malinois) with lots of problem with tartar? The owner was told to feed him with Hills HD, because of the larger size of the croquette
All the Husse superpremium formulas contain 2 components against tartar formation:
Systematic effect via seaweed (ascoplyllum nodosum): for this effect, the size of the kibble is of no importance
Better mechanical cleaning obtained thanks to the vegetable fibers which reinforce the kibble. To optimize this effect, you could advice to feed one of the larger Husse products (optimal giant)
38. What does a ”low antigenicity rating” mean?
This means that the chance to cause food allergy is very low because there are not many allergens in the food.
(an allergen is any substance that can cause an allergy)
39. How do we feed dogs with hyperthyroidism?
Animals with hyperthyroidism have an increased metabolism and need more energy: in order to avoid weight loss, a high energy/high fat formula is indicated.
40. What should we suggest for a cat suffering from pyorrhea?
